How we teach
Implementation
- KSHS teachers use Rosenshine’s principles of direct instruction to inform their curriculum planning. These principles are:
- Daily Review
- New material in small steps
- Ask questions
- Provide models
- Guide student practice
- Check student understanding
- Obtain high success rate
- Scaffolds for difficult tasks
- Independent practice
- Weekly and monthly review.
The signature strategies KSHS teachers use to implement their curriculum are:
- Prevention before sanction- by using STAR expectations, staff foster a positive learning environment.
- Checking for understanding- using mini whiteboards and utilising hinge questions in lessons allows staff to check understanding and correct misconceptions during the lesson rather than discovering it several lessons later.
- Modelling- staff deconstruct, visualise and exemplify a high standard of work to enable students to aspire to a deep acquisition of disciplinary and substantive knowledge.
- Scaffolding- Staff use knowledge organisers to illustrate sequencing, spend time on explicitly teaching tier two and three vocabulary and use I do, we do, you do strategies in the classroom to support students in their learning.
