Careers education, information, advice and guidance plays a major part in helping students prepare for their transition into adult life. We aim to help students become more aware of their strengths, interests and the options available to them; to raise student aspirations and broaden their horizons

Our Goal

We aim to provide students with up to date and relevant careers education, information, advice and guidance at each transitional stage of their education. They will, therefore have access to unbiased and professional careers support and guidance.

Students can access careers advice in the following ways:

• One to one guidance meeting with the school Careers Coordinator
• Break and lunch time drop-in session
• Careers events
• Information posted on year group TEAMS
• Assemblies
• PSHCE lessons
• Workshops

One to one guidance meetings: to arrange an individual careers meeting you can:

• Pop to see your Careers Lead during lunch times
• Speak to your Form Tutor
• Email the Careers Lead
• Make an appointment to see your Careers Lead Monday – Friday

Introduction

This policy statement sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

Student Entitlement

All students in Years 7-13 are entitled:

• To find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point.
• To hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events.
• To understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

How does King Solomon evaluate the effectiveness of its careers programme?

• Each careers event is evaluated with both students and staff to understand the usefulness of the event to future career decisions. It also allows us to make improvements for future events.
• We complete regular self-evaluation of our provision on the Compass tool, to access its progress across all eight Gatsby Benchmarks.
• Our careers programme is reviewed annually and a new timetable of events is produced at the start of each academic year.

• Support from form tutors and staff when making decisions about their future
• Opportunities to learn about the world of work through alumni talks, workplace visits, activities and events.
• Opportunities to understand the range of choices available not only at King Solomon, as well as other educational providers.
• Opportunities to understand the wider world of careers, through the curriculum.
• Opportunities to build and develop employability and enterprise skills.

Key stage three students will be given the opportunity to

• Register with the school careers programme, Morrisby
• Access King Solomon alumni via careers panels and bespoke workshops.
• Access careers presentations in registration to support subject options for GCSE’s and how they may impact on future career choices.
• Take part in PSHCE lessons and other activities to develop employability skills and understand about the world of work.
• Attend our Careers Fair, offering the wide variety of careers available to them including apprenticeships.
• Take part in the year 7-9 careers week.

Key stage four students will be given the opportunity to

• Attend a one to one careers guidance interview with the schools careers coordinator.
• Attend an assembly to encourage and support work experience placements.
• Given the opportunity to receive support in choosing GCSE subject options plus post 16 options.
• Access the schools careers programme Morrisby and use these resources to help to make decisions post 16.
• Opportunity to visit a local Further Education College, if appropriate.
• To attend an Apprenticeship awareness assembly (year 11)
• Attend our Careers Fair offering access to the wide variety of careers available to them, including apprenticeships.
• Receive support from form tutors and staff with making important decisions about post 16 options.

Key Stage 5 students will be given the opportunity to

• Attend university fairs and visit universities
• Access the school careers programme Morrisby and use the resources to help to make post 18 decisions.
• Attend a one-to-one careers guidance interview with the school careers coordinator.
• Receive guidance and support in writing a personal statement.
• Attend talks to give guidance on applying to Russell Group, Oxbridge and overseas universities, together with support from personal mentors.
• Meet with our extensive alumni network and community partners who have followed a range of career and post 18 pathways.
• Take full advantage of a wide range of University Summer Schools.
• Receive support with mock interviews and personal statements with leading professionals in the field.
• Have access to a mentor who will support them in their transition into sixth form.
• Attend our careers fair to have access to the wide variety of careers available to them, including apprenticeships

It provides access to a selection of UK headline data relating to pay, weekly hours of work and future employment prospects for different occupations, as well as description of the occupation. King Solomon High School is also part of the Careers Hub East and helps young people to build the skills and experiences they need to lead successful futures.
